Tummy Tuck Surgery

(Abdominoplasty)

Surgery Overview

Nestled just an hour’s drive from the heart of Canberra, our Goulburn facility offers comprehensive Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty) services, supported by the latest in medical technology. Tummy Tuck surgery (Abdominoplasty) aims to remove excess, stretched skin and underlying fat from the lower abdomen. It can also repair umbilical hernias and realign the rectus muscles into their normal position at the same time.

Common effects of pregnancy are stretch marks, excess skin, and an excess fat pad on the lower abdomen. With multiple children, the risk of front abdominal muscles drifting apart increases, known as diastasis recti. It is also common for hernias to develop, or a bulging through the midline of the abdomen. As well as this, excess skin and fat in this area can be an effect of large weight loss, as the stretched skin may not shrink back into place.

Surgery can correct these concerns, helping to restore the abdomen after weight loss or pregnancy. The aim of Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty) is to remove sagging skin and excess fat from the middle and lower abdomen and repair the muscles. This procedure can be effective in removing excess skin and fat, and tightening loose muscles, to create a firmer and flatter abdomen. However, you should note that the results are not guaranteed and can vary depending on the patient, surgical techniques, and the skill of the surgeon.

There are different types of Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty). This includes mini or standard, extended, fleur de lis, belt lipectomy and corset procedures. Surgeons use each of these to address specific problems, depending on the patient’s needs.

While Tummy Tuck Surgery can be done for cosmetic reasons, it may also:

  • Correct issues caused by pregnancy, obesity, large weight loss, trauma, tumours or other diseases
  • Correct or relieve structural defects in the abdomen
  • Improve the function and support of stomach muscles
  • Reduce back pain
  • Help with urinary incontinence
  • Create a more normal appearance of the abdomen
  • Repair an abdominal hernia that has followed a past surgery or pregnancy
  • Remove large apron of fat, also called a “pannus.” This excess fat can cause chronic dermatitis, skin infections, difficulty in walking and difficulties with hygiene. An “apronectomy” is the name given to the surgical removal of a pannus.
