It is possible that implants can interfere with breast cancer detection in the case of mammography, which is a type of X-ray examination. However, in skilled radiological hands this is unusual and can be mitigated with specific techniques during Mammogram. Also an MRI can be utilized in preference to Mammogram, if that is your choice.

It is important to disclose if you have had breast cancer, or there is a history of breast cancer in your family. It is very important that you self-examine your breasts for lumps, and have regular testing and follow-up appointments for an in-depth examination of your breasts for lumps while assessing the state of your implants.

Ability to breastfeed can be variable in different people. In general, you will be able to breastfeed after having breast augmentation, but there have been cases in which women experience reduced nipple sensation, which can create difficulty triggering the milk let-down reflex. There have also been cases in which women have experienced a reduced milk supply. If you are planning to have children after breast augmentation surgery, this should be discussed and considered as part of your consultation.

Commonly, breast augmentation surgery is best suited for a woman in her 30s however it is also a regular procedure for women up to their 50s. Whatever your age, we encourage a consultation to assess your situation and find the best option moving forward.

Pregnancy will undoubtedly affect the size and shape of the breasts which may adversely affect an augmented breast. A 6-month gap is recommended between pregnancy and surgery. Breastfeeding is still possible and safe with implants.

Sagging breasts, or “ptosis,” can have breast implants; however, additional surgery may also be necessary. If the nipples droop below the lower crease of the breast, a mastopexy or breast lift may be required.

Walking after breast augmentation surgery is fine; however, intense physical exercise is not recommended for six weeks following the procedure as it may cause implants to shift position.

Depending on the physical demands of your job, upper arm movements should be avoided for the first 1-2 weeks and lifting heavy objects should be avoided for 6 weeks after the operation.

A breast augmentation often causes moderate pain that can be controlled with medication in the first 2 weeks following the surgery.

There are several options when it comes to breast augmentation, including general or local anaesthesia, or twilight sedation. These will depend on your specific situation and can be discussed during your consultation. We generally recommend general anaesthesia for this procedure.

While anaesthesia is very safe, there can be risks associated with it that will be discussed prior to your procedure. It is very important that we review any medications you may be taking as well as any allergies you may have. You can be sure that all of the appropriate steps will be taken to create the safest situation for you during your breast augmentation surgery.

Keeping fit and being in as good a shape as possible will significantly assist the success rate and recovery process of your procedure. It would be best if you were at or close to your optimal weight and that any medications that may be ceased are stopped (this is dependent on the medication and should be discussed with your surgeon). It is very important that you are not a smoker or trying to stop.

Your complete medical history including any health problems, medication, and allergies need to be discussed and examined during your consultation to ensure this procedure is right for you and any associated risks will be as low as possible.

Medications that you may be required to cease can include:

• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Aspirin (or medicines that contain aspirin)
• Naturopathic substances (including garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, and St John’s Wort)
• All medications or supplements that differ from the above will still need to be disclosed

Prior to surgery, you may be given antibiotics, and you will need to disclose if you have had an allergy or adverse reaction to antibiotics in the past or to anaesthetic drugs or any other medicine. Other situations that will be important to raise if relevant include:

• Experience with prolonged bleeding or excessive bruising
• Any connective-tissue disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, lupus erythematosus, or similar
• Long-term or recent illnesses
• Any previous surgery including for breast cancer, or radiotherapy treatment
• Any psychological or psychiatric illnesses

In most cases, pre-operative tests, including blood tests, Ultrasound and Mammogram may be necessary, and additionally in some cases further work up may be required, depending on the health status.

Post-surgery there will be dressings or bandages for your incisions or a compression garment which will help to reduce swelling while supporting your new breasts while they heal. In some cases, a small tube may be placed under the skin for drainage of excess blood or fluid.
Most patients will need a one to two weeks for recuperation in the immediate phase post surgery and will have to ensure that no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise is performed while you recover. Please be aware of the following symptoms, and notify the team at Breast and Body Clinic immediately if you experience:

• A temperature higher than 38°C or continuous chills
• Nausea or vomiting
• Shortness of breath or diarrhea
• Heavy bleeding or leakage of blood or fluid
• Worsening redness around the incision
  Increasing pain
• Any other problems that appear to be worsening

Our skilled team will give you instructions on post-operative care which you should follow to the letter. These may include:

• How to care for your tender areas following surgery
• Medications to aid healing
• Specific concerns to be aware of and when to follow-up with your surgeon

It is important to note that scarring is inevitable in invasive surgery; however, Dr. Yunaev works to minimise scarring with placement in inconspicuous areas such as easily hidden sites along natural skin lines and creases. Scars will also likely fade over time.

It is important to be aware upfront, that Breast implants like any other man made object, are not designed to last forever. Their typical lifespan is 10-15 years, with the risk of failure and additional problems rising significantly thereafter. Therefore, your breast implants will likely require revision surgery in the future, to either update them or to remove them entirely, depending on your preference.
