How To Get Rid of Man Boobs: Understanding Gynaecomastia

Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia Surgery)

Gynaecomastia is a common condition characterised by excess breast tissue in men. It affects nearly 35% of adult males in Australia across all age groups and can impact body image, confidence, and comfort.

BB Clinic offers gynaecomastia surgery in Sydney to help get rid of “man boobs“, removing unwanted excess skin, breast fat or glandular tissue from the male chest. Our approach blends the latest surgical techniques with a high degree of personalised care, under the close observation of our in-house Specialist Breast and General Surgeon, Dr Michael Yunaev.

Fat or Gland? A Quick Self-Check

Before you can work out how to get rid of man boobs, it helps to understand what’s causing the enlargement. Chest tissue generally falls into one of two categories:

  • Soft, mobile, and evenly distributed across the chest, which moves and compresses easily like the fat elsewhere on your body, is more likely to be pseudogynaecomastia, a fat-based enlargement that may respond to weight loss and exercise.
  • Firm, rubbery, and concentrated directly beneath the nipple, often with a distinct disc-like lump you can feel when you press in toward the chest wall, points to true gynaecomastia, which is glandular tissue that will not shrink no matter how much weight you lose or how many chest workouts you do.

This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. Many men have a mix of both fat and glandular tissue, and the only reliable way to confirm what you’re dealing with is a physical examination with a specialist. If you’re unsure which applies to you, read more about what causes enlarged male breasts.

What Causes Gynaecomastia?

The male breast is made up of glandular tissue and fat, similar to the female breast. An excess of either of these components causes gynaecomastia. This is quite common during puberty due to hormonal changes, and can be present in one or both breasts.

It can also develop due to:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Weight gain
  • Genetic conditions
  • Diseases, such as liver disease
  • Certain medications
  • Steroids
  • Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs

The Weight on Your Shoulders: The Psychological Side of Gynaecomastia

The physical presentation of gynaecomastia is only part of the picture. For many men, the condition carries a psychological weight that’s easy to underestimate.

Chest appearance is tied up in how men perceive their own masculinity, and gynaecomastia can chip away at that steadily over the years. It’s common for men with the condition to avoid activities like swimming, changing at the gym, taking a shirt off at the beach, or even being intimate with a partner.

This is a legitimate source of chronic self-consciousness, anxiety, and, in some cases, depression, particularly when the condition has been present for years. Because gynaecomastia is often dismissed as a purely cosmetic issue, many men delay seeking help.

Recognising this impact is part of why we take a whole-person approach at BB Clinic, rather than treating the chest in isolation from the man attached to it.

“Man Boobs? – What Are Your Treatment Options For Gynaecomastia?”

In some cases, men may seek to undergo a man boob surgery after massive weight loss. This is because massive weight loss can create a number of problems with excess skin across various areas of the body, including the chest. A large skin reduction procedure can benefit patients in these cases.
