Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia Surgery)

Gynaecomastia is a common condition that is characterized by excess breast tissue in men across all ages. This condition affects nearly 35% of all adult males in Australia, and could impact one’s body image, confidence and comfort.

BB Clinic offers gynaecomastia surgery (gyno surgery) for male breast reduction. Our approach blends the latest surgical techniques with a high degree of personalised care, under the close observation of our in-house Specialist Breast and General Surgeon, Dr Michael Yunaev.

Male breast reduction, or gyno surgery, aims to remove unwanted breast fat from the male chest.

What causes Gynaecomastia?

The male breast is made up of glandular tissue and fat, similar to the female breast. An excess of either of these components causes Gynaecomastia. This is quite common during puberty due to hormonal changes, and could be present in one or both breasts.

Here are some of the reasons why it might develop:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Weight gain
  • Genetic conditions
  • Diseases, such as liver disease
  • Certain medications
  • Steroids
  • Use of non-prescription or recreational drugs (Cannabis)

Gynaecomastia Surgery in Sydney

What is Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery (sometimes spelt gynecomastia), is a male breast reduction surgery – that removes excess, unwanted glandular tissue, fat and skin that can create the appearance of female breasts.

This condition causes the male chest to look overly large and protuberant, due to excessive growth of glandular tissue or fat. While this isn’t a medically serious condition, it could cause a man’s breasts to sag and the area around the areola to stretch – causing pain and discomfort while exercising, and even emotional discomfort.

Undergoing gynaecomastia surgery can help address these concerns. The surgical technique will be decided after arriving at the cause. If it is due to excess fat, a liposuction procedure would suffice. However, if it is due to excess growth of glandular tissue, then a surgical excision would be required. All surgical procedures are performed under general anaesthesia, to ensure patient safety and comfort.

It is advisable to consult with a specialist to understand whether you are a good candidate for this surgery. Dr. Yunaev is our specialist Breast and General Surgeon. During your consultation, he will assess your condition and understand your goals, and work with you to create a tailored surgical plan for your needs.

Depending on the nature of your condition, Dr Yunaev may perform both liposuction and excision of the gland tissue and skin reduction if it is needed. The excision is the key part of this procedure, which involves surgical removal of the excess tissue via incisions. Liposuction alone is not sufficient for true gynaecomastia, but may be a good option for pseudo gynaecomastia, also known as lipomastia.

“Man Boobs? – What Are Your Treatment Options For Gynaecomastia?”

In some cases, men may seek to undergo a man boob surgery after massive weight loss. This is because massive weight loss can create a number of problems with excess skin across various areas of the body, including the chest. A large skin reduction procedure can benefit patients in these cases.

The exact benefits of your male breast reduction will depend on the details of the procedure. If you are interested in gynaecomastia surgery, you could consult with Sydney’s Specialist Breast Surgeon Dr Yunaev, for personalised guidance.
