It is normal and natural that breasts don’t look exactly the same. However, some patients experience a high degree of uneven breast development. In some cases, this can significantly affect a person’s self-esteem. Breast asymmetry can be corrected with surgical procedures, and different techniques can be used to achieve a harmonious and balanced result.
If you experience breast asymmetry we strongly recommend a consultation with Dr. Yunaev to assess your current situation and define your goals. There are many variations to not only the procedure but also the types of asymmetry that you may be experiencing so an assessment is crucial before deciding to continue with this procedure.

What can breast asymmetry surgery do for me?

To create symmetry between a patient’s breasts, Dr. Yunaev can perform for example an asymmetrical breast augmentation on the smaller breast to achieve a matching size. In other cases, a breast reduction procedure might be used to create the symmetry. Some other patients might benefit from other techniques such as a breast lift, or a combination of other breast procedures; for example, breast implants of different sizes can be used to create symmetry.

There could be several skin incision patterns used for a breast implant asymmetry surgery, which will depend on each patient’s case of breast asymmetry. These can include a circular incision, a vertical scar, and an anchor type incision. At Breast & Body Clinic we aim to minimise scarring on the breast, but primarily the choice of operation is dictated by the patient’s own biology and physique and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, lifted or if a breast implant needs to be used to achieve an even and harmonious result.

Naturally symmetrical breasts are often quite rare. If uneven breasts bother you, breast asymmetry may help depending on what your desired outcome is.

Before you decide on a breast asymmetry correction surgery, there are some critical issues to keep in mind:

  • If breast implants are needed, patients need to be aware that they are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and future surgery may be required to replace one or both implants
  • Smokers are at increased risk of complications from any surgery. If you are serious about undergoing cosmetic surgery, you should try to quit smoking
  • We generally recommend waiting until breast development, childbirth and breastfeeding have stopped before undertaking breast asymmetry correction surgery
  • Ability to breastfeed following breast symmetry surgery may be affected. Talk to your surgeon if you are planning to breastfeed a baby in the future
  • Changes in the breasts during pregnancy, or significant weight loss or gain can alter the outcomes of previous breast asymmetry correction surgery
  • Breast and nipple piercings can cause an infection

A breast asymmetry correction surgery may be a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • Your breasts are considerably uneven
  • One breast is lower than the other

Remember that the shape and size of your breasts before surgery will influence the surgical procedure and the outcome.

Am I a good candidate?

Naturally symmetrical breasts are often quite rare. If uneven breasts bother you, breast asymmetry may help depending on what your desired outcome is. For example, if you want to increase the size of your breast a uniquely sized implant in each breast may be required to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing shape.

Those who are happy with the size of their smaller breast may just require a breast lift that does not need implants. If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift can correct this. It is important to note that a breast lift may require additional incisions.

Severe asymmetry may require a combination of breast augmentation and reduction to achieve a more proportional size and shape.

To create symmetry between a patient’s breasts, Dr. Yunaev can perform for example an asymmetrical breast augmentation on the smaller breast to achieve a matching size.

Information on the Breast Reduction and Lift Procedures
Women with significant sized breasts may prefer a smaller size and shape for comfort or in some cases, pain relief. If this is the case, a breast reduction works to remove tissue and can be used in an augmentation focusing on the larger of the two breasts to create an even size. Breast reductions can be performed via excision or liposuction to contour the size and shape of the breast.

A breast lift may be required if you experience an asymmetry which creates excessive sagging on one breast. The breast lift, or mastopexy, will remove the excess skin creating a more symmetric shape. There are various techniques that can be used to perform this procedure; however, it will depend on your body and the amount of lift required. The breast lift will remove unnecessary skin while tightening the sagging breast tissue to create a perkier aesthetic.

A combination of these two procedures may be required to achieve the best results, in which case they will be performed at the same time to decrease the recovery downtime.

Breast Asymmetry After a Breast Reconstruction
Those who have undergone a breast reconstruction or radiation therapy procedure may experience one breast with a difference in shape, size, or position. This is much more common if only one breast was reconstructed or radiation therapy on only one side.

It is strongly recommended that you wait several months after a breast reconstruction to assess the healing of your breast tissues allowing any asymmetries to stabilise. This will offer a more definite idea as to whether or not you will need a breast asymmetry procedure to help restore balance.

There are many variables in these situations that alter the processes for correcting asymmetry, which is why Dr. Yunaev and the team at Breast and Body Clinic will tailor your procedure to your unique situation. This can include adjusting the natural breast with an implant, breast lift or reduction, or injecting fat into relevant areas of the smaller breast. Known as fat grafting, the tissue is removed from the thighs, belly, or buttocks and injecting it into the breast area.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Rest and recuperation are vitally important after a breast asymmetry correction. Your breasts will be swollen and feel sore and bruised. A light support bandage will be provided which you will need to wear for a couple of weeks with a special support bra.

You may feel very tired post-surgery, experiencing the most soreness during the first two to three days for which painkillers will be prescribed. You can also apply ice packs to the sensitive areas for additional relief.

Your breasts will likely be swollen for up to a week after surgery, and it would be best if you were to avoid anything that requires you to lift or stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are my next steps after deciding on breast asymmetry surgery?
Once you have decided to go ahead with the breast asymmetry procedure and are comfortable with the process and aftercare required, we will perform some routine tests, including things like blood tests and imaging. It is vital that you provide as much detail as possible about your medical history, allergies, or any medication you may be taking.

We will take a series of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos as part of the process to see the results of the surgery and provide you with some guidelines to help you prepare for surgery.

What sort of things will be included in my surgery preparation?
Our team will inform you of what food or drink is appropriate before surgery, what to bring on the day of surgery, and any medications that may be required post-procedure. We often recommend setting up an area of your home that is comfortable to help with your recovery.

What makes me a good candidate?
This procedure is most appropriate for those with nipple asymmetry, and breasts of differing size or shape, which is quite common, and will depend on the severity of these factors.

The breast asymmetry procedure is also well suited to women with tuberous breasts. This condition causes a tubular shape as opposed to conical look to the breasts which may be potentially rectified with breast implants or breast lift/reduction, whichever is more appropriate in individual settings..

What is the process that is involved with the procedure?
Breast asymmetry is performed under general anaesthetic and involves a small incision made in the natural crease beneath the breast. Depending on the requirements of the patient, various techniques, including a breast lift, reduction, or augmentation surgery, may be applied to achieve the desired result. Depending on which is required, the operation can take as little as an hour or higher for more involved cases.

The primary objective of the breast asymmetry is a desirable balance in the size and shape of the breasts creating a symmetrical appearance with minimal drooping.

What are the benefits of this procedure?
The main benefit of this procedure is symmetrical breasts that in some cases, are higher and firmer in appearance. It is important to note, however, that a perfect match between the two breasts is near impossible to achieve.

An ideal result is equally proportioned breasts with minimal dissimilarity to increase the confidence and comfort of the patient.

Are there any risks involved in this procedure?
Any surgical procedure brings with it a level of risk; however, the breast asymmetry operation, especially in the capable hands of Dr. Yunaev and the experienced team at Breast and Body Clinic involves a very small amount of risk. Rare complications such as bleeding, infection, and excessive pain may be experienced; some patients may also notice a reduction in nipple sensation.

As with most procedures which involve an incision, there is a risk of haematoma development, capsular contracture, and in the case where implants are required, fluid formation around the implant.

Will I need more surgeries down the track?
If breast implants are included as part of your breast augmentation, it is common for them to last for approximately ten to fifteen years. At this point, a removal or replacement will likely be required. It is also important to note that ageing, pregnancy or childbirth, and simple gravity can have an effect on the appearance of your breasts, which may require further surgery at some point. This is particularly pertinent if you undergo excessive weight loss.

What should I expect after the procedure?
The team at Breast and Body Clinic will monitor your post-operative progress to ensure your breast symmetry, volume, and wound care is all problem free. If you are experiencing any issues during your recovery, the follow-up consultations are in place to address them.
