There could be several skin incision patterns used for a breast implant asymmetry surgery, which will depend on each patient’s case of breast asymmetry. These can include a circular incision, a vertical scar, and an anchor type incision. Before you decide on a breast asymmetry correction surgery, there are some critical issues to keep in mind:

• If breast implants are needed, patients need to be aware that they are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and future surgery may be required to replace these
• Smokers are at increased risk of complications from any surgery. If you are serious about undergoing cosmetic surgery, you should try to quit smoking
• We generally recommend waiting until breast development, childbirth and breastfeeding have stopped before undertaking breast asymmetry correction surgery
• Ability to breastfeed following breast symmetry surgery may be affected. Talk to your surgeon if you are planning to breastfeed a baby in the future
• Changes in the breasts during pregnancy, or significant weight loss or gain can alter the outcomes of previous breast asymmetry correction surgery
• Breast and nipple piercings can cause an infection

A breast asymmetry correction surgery may be a good option for you if:

• You are physically healthy
• You have realistic expectations
• Your breasts are fully developed
• Your breasts are considerably uneven
• One breast is lower than the other

Remember that the shape and size of your breasts before surgery will influence the surgical procedure and the outcome.

Women with significant sized breasts may prefer a smaller size and shape for comfort or in some cases, pain/dyscomfort relief. If this is the case, a breast reduction works to remove tissue and can be used in conjunction with an augmentation mammoplasty procedure on the contralateral breast, focusing on the larger of the two breasts to create an even size. Breast reduction mammoplasty can be performed via excision or liposuction to contour the size and shape of the breast.

A breast lift/mastopexy may be required if you experience an asymmetry which creates excessive sagging on one breast. The breast lift, or mastopexy, will remove the excess skin creating a more symmetric shape. There are various techniques that can be used to perform this procedure; however, it will depend on your body and the amount of lift required. The breast lift mastopexy will remove unnecessary skin while tightening the sagging breast tissue to create a perkier aesthetic.

A combination of these two procedures may be required to achieve the best results, in which case they will be performed at the same time to decrease the recovery downtime.

Those who have undergone a breast reconstruction or radiation therapy procedure may experience one breast with a difference in shape, size, or position. This is much more common if only one breast was reconstructed or radiation therapy on only one side.

It is strongly recommended that you wait several months after a breast reconstruction to assess the healing of your breast tissues allowing any asymmetries to stabilise. This will offer a more definite idea as to whether or not you will need a breast asymmetry procedure to help restore balance.

For example, if you want to increase the size of your breast a uniquely sized implant in each breast may be required to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing shape.

Those who are happy with the size of their smaller breast may just require a breast lift/mastopexy that does not need implants. If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift mastopexy can correct this. It is important to note that a breast lift mastopexy may require additional incisions.

Severe asymmetry may require a combination of breast augmentation mammoplasty and reduction mammoplasty to achieve a more proportional size and shape.
