Target belly fat, thighs, back, arms and more. Safely remove body fat with power assisted liposuction.

Liposuction, also known as lipectomy or lipoplasty, is a procedure that improves the body’s contours and proportion by removing excess fat deposits or “love handles” to slim and reshape specific areas of the body.

Liposuction can offer the following benefits:

  • Permanently remove stubborn fat
  • Little downtime (around 3, 4 days)
  • Smooth curves and contours
  • Tightened skin
  • Better fitting clothes
  • Become your own biggest fan

The liposuction procedure has been around for a long time and is a beneficial option for many corrective and aesthetic situations. It can be done as part of other operations such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction or to reshape a flap post-reconstruction or can be performed on its own targeting other common areas such as thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms, neck and under the chin.

Often it is used as a fine-tuning cosmetic procedure. Liposuction surgery can be done as a day procedure depending on the amount of liposuction performed and generally is well tolerated with a low complication rate.

Liposuction is invasive surgery that aims to improve the body’s contours and proportion by removing localised and disproportional deposits of fat. Liposuction procedures can remove up to five litres of fat with relative safety during one session.

What can liposuction do for me?

Liposuction is invasive surgery that aims to improve the body’s contours and proportion by removing localised and disproportional deposits of fat. Liposuction procedures can remove up to five litres of fat with relative safety during one session. Depending on the number of areas that require treatment, repeated treatments may be necessary.

Specific techniques of liposuction include:

  • Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) where fat is removed from the body using a vacuum suction. SAL may be dry, wet or tumescent depending on the volume of saline (salt solution) which is injected into the operation site before the procedure begins
  • Ultrasonic Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL) uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy the fat cells before SAL is used to remove the liquefied fat and to smooth the edges of the treated areas
  • Mechanical Assisted Lipoplasty (MAL) uses an oscillating shaver driven by a motor to shave the fat which is vacuumed away as used in the SAL and UAL methods
  • Patients looking for a multi-stage treatment plan potentially involving breast reduction and tummy tuck surgery as required are advised to start a discussion with our staff

Some procedures may be eligible for a private health fund rebate. This can be discussed at a consultation, and will also vary from case to case.

The Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction is a very popular procedure and has been one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in Australia for quite some time. One of the reasons why so many people opt for liposuction is the benefits beyond just a decrease in their weight.

We make it clear to our patients that liposuction is not a procedure for losing weight, rather an avenue for those who struggle to achieve their desired weight goals via diet and exercise, especially those who are working towards significant weight loss. If you are someone who has undergone massive weight loss, body contouring such as liposuction or the tummy tuck procedure will be of great benefit to you.

With liposuction, Dr. Yunaev can target specific areas of the body, the stubborn fat that seems to be untouched by your diet and hard work at the gym. This can lead to a more proportional shape to your body after liposuction. This procedure will contour your body, blending in with your natural shape, and by continuing with your diet and exercise routine to maintain a stable weight, your results will be long term.

It is also important to point out the emotional benefits of liposuction as the procedure can align your body image to the way you feel, giving a newfound sense of confidence and self-appreciation.

The improvements in self-esteem that follow when patients feel more comfortable with their body or the satisfaction of completing a weight loss journey are significant. It can be hard to measure emotional benefits, but we see patients who feel much better in their own bodies as a result of liposuction.

The benefits for each patient will vary as everyone is unique and have their own goals for their liposuction results. The best way to understand the benefits applicable to you is by booking a consultation with Dr. Yunaev. This session will be used to understand your body contouring goals and how best to achieve them.hter skin.[/caption]

Are you a good candidate?

Dr. Michael Yunaev may recommend this procedure for you if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are a non-smoker or have stopped smoking
  • You have bulges that persist despite a healthy diet and exercise
  • Liposuction is most likely to be successful for healthy weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. Although age is not a significant concern, older people may have less skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger person with tighter skin

Before opting for liposuction, you must keep in mind that:

  • Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss
  • If your skin is dimpled before the liposuction, it will probably still be dimpled afterward the procedure has been done
  • If the ‘extra’ skin doesn’t contract (tighten) after liposuction, you may need a further procedure to remove excess skin
  • You may not be able to undergo the procedure if you are unable to have an anaesthetic, if you are prone to bleeding tendencies or have a poor healing ability or are too high risk of having surgical complications

Frequently asked questions

What are realistic expectations for liposuction surgery?

The results of liposuction are semi-permanent. Gaining weight after liposuction means the figure will be a larger version of the new body shape. The fat cells removed by liposuction do not grow back.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

The most frequently treated areas are the abdomen, breasts, hips, outer thighs, anterior thighs, inner thighs, knees, arms, buttocks, cheeks, and neck. Men make up about 15% to 25% of liposuction patients, focusing on the chin and neck area, abdomen, flanks, and chest.

What are the risks of liposuction surgery?

Too much liposuction on a single day creates the most significant risk. Liposuction is very safe with only the standard surgical procedure risks like infections, bleeding, skin ulcerations, and nerve injury a possible risk.

How do I choose the right surgeon?

Never base a liposuction choice on the cost as the cheapest procedure often means shortcuts may be taken. The surgeon you choose should have specialised training in the techniques of liposuction.

How long is the recovery time?

If performed under local anesthesia, patients can leave the surgery roughly 30 minutes after completion. If general anesthesia is used, then one to three hours of post-anesthesia observation is required. You can return to a desk-type job two days after liposuction.

Is liposuction a treatment for obesity?

Liposuction should not be used in place of weight loss by dieting and exercise.

Can liposuction help with excessive sweating?

Yes., a liposuction procedure can help reduce sweating under the arms with long-lasting results.

Is there an age limit?

There is no specific age requirement; however, all patients are assessed to ensure that they are in good health and suitable for the procedure. We will discuss your body goals and ensure that liposuction is right for you.

Is there a weight limit?

As liposuction is a body shaping procedure, it is best for patients who weigh in the normal to slightly overweight BMI range. This procedure should not be used as a way to lose excessive amounts of weight, more to contour the body and target stubborn areas of fat.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Liposuction can be performed under both general and local anaesthetic, and both options will be discussed during your consultation, with a recommendation of which may be best for you.

How long does liposuction take?

A standard procedure will usually be completed in one hour; however, there are several factors that may shorten or lengthen the time frame slightly based on the needs of each patient. This will be made much clearer during your consultation once we have evaluated how much liposuction is required.

Is liposuction painful?

If you opt for the general anaesthetic, it will ensure your comfort during surgery; however, you will likely experience some tenderness after the procedure. Everyone experiences a different pain threshold; however, any post-operative pain will subside within a few days after your procedure. Those who have local anaesthesia may experience slightly more discomfort in some areas during the procedure.

What can I expect after the operation?

We recommend that you apply ice during the first twenty-four hours after your procedure on top of your compression garment to help with your recovery. You may experience some liquid seeping through your dressings; however, this is normal for about twenty-four hours, and new dressings can be applied after this time. As part of the recovery process, a firm compression garment will need to be worn for roughly two weeks.

While you may experience some tenderness initially, you will be able to take over-the-counter pain relief to reduce any discomfort. We recommend waiting around two weeks before exercising and will assess your situation during a follow-up appointment to ensure your recovery is on track and offer more information as to what activities you can resume.

Are there any possible complications?

The liposuction procedure has come a long way, and the modern techniques used today have shown a reduction in bruising and swelling. You may develop a bruise under the skin or experience weeping fluid; however, all of this is normal and will subside quickly. If you experience any numbness, it will also only be for a short amount of time.

How long will the results last?

Liposuction provides long-lasting results as the fat cells removed by the procedure do not return. However, weight gain will affect remnant fat cells to hypertrophy, but this will likely be evident in other areas first. Many people report that the process of weight loss is easier after their liposuction as they have received a confidence boost from their new body shape, creating more of an incentive to keep fit.

What do I need to know about the compression bandage?

It is strongly recommended that a compression garment is worn after your procedure to help reduce any bruising or swelling, assisting with your recovery. The garment helps to reduce the risk of complications while also helping your skin to retract, providing a more desirable result.

Will there be a lot of excess skin after liposuction?

Skin is surprisingly elastic, and it will shrink and adapt to your new contours over time. The quality of the patient’s skin can be a determining factor in how quickly this happens, and if required, we have other procedures available to deal with excess or saggy skin in particular cases. Your compression garment will also assist in the recovery of your skin.
