Whether Medicare contributes toward your labiaplasty cost in Australia depends on two item numbers listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), the government’s list of subsidised medical procedures. Each item covers a specific set of circumstances.

MBS Item 35533

MBS item 35533covers vulvoplasty or labioplasty performed to repair female genital mutilation, or to repair an anomaly associated with a major congenital anomaly of the uro-gynaecological tract. This is a reconstructive item intended for specific, documented medical situations rather than general cosmetic requests.

MBS Item 35534

MBS item 35534 covers vulvoplasty or labioplasty in a patient aged 18 years or over, performed by a specialist, for a structural abnormality that is causing significant functional impairment, where the labium extends more than 8 cm below the vaginal opening while the patient is standing at rest. Detailed clinical documentation is required, and Medicare audits claims made under this item.

Aesthetic concerns on their own do not qualify for a rebate, even when they cause genuine distress. Medicare only contributes where there is documented, clinically significant functional impairment. The Medicare Rebate

If your labiaplasty meets the criteria for MBS item 35533 or 35534, Medicare provides a rebate toward the surgeon’s fee, which is already reflected in our starting figure. Eligibility is assessed carefully and requires appropriate documentation, so this pathway applies only where there is a genuine, recorded medical need.

Early Release of Superannuation

Some patients access their superannuation early on compassionate grounds to help meet the cost of surgery. This is approved by the ATO only for medically necessary treatment, and purely cosmetic procedures generally do not meet the criteria. If your labiaplasty is being performed for a functional or reconstructive reason, this may be an option worth considering.
