1. Consultation
The first step will be a detailed medical evaluation, which entails advanced imaging techniques along with a thorough diagnostic review. Based on this, Dr. Yunaev will work with you to develop a tailored surgical plan, taking into account your individual medical needs, anatomy, emotional and functional concerns.
2. Surgery
The actual procedure is generally performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours. During surgery, Dr. Yunaev will carefully remove the lump along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue to ensure clear boundaries. During the lumpectomy, our surgical team focuses on three critical objectives:
- Completely removing the abnormal tissue with clear margins
- Minimizing surgical impact on surrounding healthy breast tissue
- Preserving the breast’s natural contours as much as possible
In most oncological cases, lymph nodes will also be removed for testing (sentinel lymph node biopsy) to determine whether cancer has spread. Wherever needed, we may also offer oncoplastic techniques, which combine cancer surgery with plastic and reconstructive approaches for the best possible aesthetic outcome.
At BB Clinic, we use modern surgical techniques to minimise scarring and preserve the natural contour of the breast. We strive to adopt the most minimally invasive approach possible, using technologies that help maximize the likelihood of complete abnormal tissue removal.
3. Recovery
Post-surgery, most patients can return home the same day. We set up multiple follow-up appointments to monitor healing, address any concerns, and discuss next steps, which may include radiation and / or chemotherapy and endocrine/biologics therapy. Throughout this period, we provide detailed guidance and support until you recover completely.
Our extensive access for patients allows us to offer unparalleled personal attention, ensuring you receive highly attentive and continuous care throughout your entire surgical journey, and not be treated like a number in a large, busy public hospital clinic. This also ensures that you see the same people for your extensive long term follow up, who know your situation inside out and can plan the best treatment options for you.
Whether you’re undergoing a lumpectomy in Sydney or travelling from elsewhere in NSW or Australia, we are here to guide you through every stage of your care – ensuring you’re informed, supported, and confident throughout your journey.
