When one talks with women who are considering breast implants, breast reduction surgery or other types of cosmetic or reconstructive breast surgery, two factors are foremost on the patients’ minds: (1) will my result look natural? and (2) is there a way I can preview different options to see the final result?
Just as technology has transformed medicine in so many remarkable ways, a new 3D software technology called Crisalix is transforming the way patients approach breast surgery. The software, now available at the Breast and Body Clinic, enables a patient to preview the surgical result.
Dr Michael Yunaev, principal surgeon at the Breast & Body Clinic, is using it to help patients preview results of breast implants as well as reduction and revision surgeries, and the technology can also now allow patients to preview other procedures like tummy tucks and liposuction.
“Having realistic expectations and communicating well with your surgeon is very important for the success of your surgical journey, and this software definitely helps a lot in this process” – says Dr Michael Yunaev.
Crisalix is the leading 3D virtual reality (VR) imaging solution used by plastic surgeons around the world. Traditional pre-surgical consultations involve 2D photos or demonstrations with various breast sizes, but Crisalix technology actually allows the patient to see surgical results in relation to their own bodies, and to compare options like the difference between what a 300cc and 400cc implant will look like.
Before Crisalix, surgeons were limited in how to communicate to patients regarding what breast augmentation or reduction results would look like. Crisalix is easy; the surgeon takes a few photos and then Crisalix technology converts the photos into a virtual reality platform that patients can actually use to visualize options for cup size, implant size, lift and more.
Patients can see their bodies from various angles –front and side – and see how differently proportioned implants look with their bodies. A patient can even look down and visualize what her breasts will look like from that angle as well. Best of all, patients are extremely pleased and somewhat amazed to find that surgical results are so close or even identical to what they previewed on virtual reality. Patient satisfaction is very high with this technology.
Crisalix was developed in Switzerland by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and the Institute of Surgical Technology and Biomechanics (ISTB) at the University of Bern. The designers incorporated advanced medical research and state-of-the-art virtual reality imaging and information technology to create the software.
A very large clinical study of over 40,000 patient consultations involving more than 1,500 physicians was performed to develop and refine the software. The company was a spinoff of the above institutes, and is located in Lausanne (Switzerland), with several branch offices in Spain, the Czech Republic and the Philippines.
WANT TO SEE YOUR NEW LOOK BEFORE THE PROCEDURE?
At Breast & Body Clinic you can. With Crisalix 3D technology, simulate the different options and select your favorite.
Patients love Crisalix. The software has given them the necessary confidence to proceed with surgery. In fact, the patient decision rate with Crisalix is twice as high as consultations that did not use Crisalix. There are also dramatically fewer revision surgeries, and post-satisfaction surveys are 99 percent, compared with the typical 80 to 85 percent for breast augmentation or reduction surgeries.
The virtual reality technology that Crisalix offers has helped so many patients visualize their bodies. For example, women who are petite with small features often worry about getting implants that are too big for their frame and therefore don’t look natural. Women who are having revision surgery are naturally worried about what the second result will look like, given that the first surgery did not meet her expectations.
Women who have breast surgery want an improved physique, but they also want to look natural and feel natural when wearing their clothes. With Crisalix, women can achieve that goal. At the Breast and Body Clinic, we are thrilled to have this new technological capability available for our patients. Give us a call today and we will set up your Crisalix consultation.
